How To Treat And Hide Scars

Become the master of disguise with these tips on how to hide and treat scars.

Most of us have scars. And we aren’t talking about the emotional ones. No, we are talking about skin scars. Whether caused by acne, injuries or surgery, many women (and men) spend a lot of time trying to heal and coverup scars with a variety of cosmetics products. Some work and others don’t.

Here are some tips on how you can disguise, cover, hide and even heal scars faster, giving you more confidence in your skin.

For Light Scars:

Light scars are generally less than two years old and are flatter than most. They are also a lot easier to hide last minute and heal a lot faster, should there be no additional damage to the skin.

All you need is sunscreen and a good concealer. The sunscreen will protect the scar from sun exposure and treat the scar with skin-healing ingredients, such as quercetin, petrolatum and vitamin C.

If the scar is on the face, try using a concealer which has vitamin C and sunscreen in it so it works to both heal and protect the scar at the same time. Then apply your foundation as normal over the top.

Apply a long-wearing, full-coverage concealer which contains sunscreen in it and apply a thin layer over the scar. The trick is to dab not rub. Rubbing won’t hide the scar and can in-fact make it stand out more. By dabbing, you are filling in the spaces and essentially blotting out the scar to be covered with foundation, for a quick and easy cover.

You can also try using a colour which is on the opposite end of the colour wheel to hide scars, as it works to cancel out the colour of the scar, which is generally a different shade entirely to the rest of your skin, from the damaged cells. For example if you have a scar which is red, use a concealer which has a green undertone to it as it will neutralise the red.

Medium to Deep Scars:

These scars are usually older than two years and are a little deeper in texture on the skin. They can be a little more difficult to treat, and in some cases, a cosmetic procedure from a dermatologist or plastic surgeon to remove the scar may be necessary.

All of which sounds a little too scary and expensive. Especially if you need more than one treatment to heal and remove the scar. Nova Pharmaceuticals has released a fabulous new product called SCARmed (RRP $24.95), which is an at at-home treatment to heal scars.

SCARmed is a non-sticky, rapidly drying, premium grade advanced Silicion gel, which has been clinically proven to reduce, heal and hide scarring, whilst also providing hydration to smoothen out and soften the skin.

Silicon gel is widely used amongst dermatologists and plastic surgeons as a first line of treatment for any scarring on the skin, both old and new scars, but seeking such appointments can be costly, especially when more than one treatment is required to treat the scars. So, how does SCARmed work?

The formula is a stand-alone, rapid drying treatment which can be applied directly to the skin and works to create an encompassing silicone elastomer sheeting across the scarring, helping skin to heal faster for both old and new scars. It does this by increasing the skin’s temperature by two degrees which has been proven to increase collagenase activity in the cells of the skin. Collagenase is when skin collagen re-stablises, which is beneficial in the healing of scars as it will soften, lighten and flatten any damage to the skin, over time.

Silicone gel has also proven to increase hydration to the skin when applied to scars. The clinical efficacy of increased hydration for flattening and blanching of scars proved a significant reduction in itching and pain and also helped the skin to heal a lot faster than if it was untreated and dry.

SCARmed is easy to use and is best used twice daily AM and PM for a minimum treatment of anywhere between sixty to ninety days, maybe longer depending on the severity of the scar. It should never been used on any open wounds, but applied to the area once the scar has completely sealed. All it takes is a thin coat of the silicon gel morning and night and you will noticeably start to see differences within a week.

The gel is so light, it is easy to wear with and under any other product, like face moisturiser and foundation. Just let it sit for at least five minutes so it’s completely dry before adding any other products to the face. Or to the body, depending where the scar is located.
