How to rock a dark lip

Dark lips are big this Autumn. Here’s how to rock a dark lip the right way.

Estee Lauder’s Joan Small shows Bondi Beauty how to rock a dark lip.

Bondi Beauty spoke to Nica Marcello, National Education & Special Events Manager, Estee Lauder, AERIN and Tom Ford Beauty about perfecting the dark lip.

This Autumn, dark, rich saturated purple tones are a big look. There’s no need to be afraid of a dark lip as long as you know how to wear it right.  One of the keys according to Nica Marcello from Estee Lauder is to tone down the rest of your make-up, “Clean, defined looking eyes are the best partner for a dark lip. Think well defined brows, a neutral matte shadow such as taupe or a light bronze and two-to-three coats of mascara.”

She says to take care when selecting a darker coloured lip tone, as they are not all the same; “When opting to wear darker colours it’s best to choose shades that have a berry undertone rather than blue or black which can be too severe and can also age you.”

Carefully looking at your skin tone is critical. “When choosing a shade to suit your complexion, it’s generally best to compliment your skins undertone. For example, if you have yellow undertones, go for warmer tones, if you have more of a pink undertone, cool tones work best.

Lip pencils are important, but there’s a key difference to lighter shades – you apply it after; “Lip liner needs to be applied after and not before lipstick, as darker lip liner is harder to blend if applied first. It’s always a good idea to apply a darker lip with a lip brush. Start in the centre of the lips and blend the colour out toward the corners of the mouth.”

And with a darker tone, the condition of your lips is very important. “You should never apply dark lipstick on dry, chapped lips. Ensure your lips are exfoliated and conditioned with a lip balm. I recommend using the Pure Color Envy Blooming Lip Balm in this instance.”

And finally to really rock a dark lip, Nica has an insider tip: “That really depends on how you are playing up your other features. A flawless base with a naked eye can work wonders with a bold lip and really make a statement.”
