How to Achieve the Best Skin of Your Life

Bondi Beauty speaks to clinical skincare specialist Douglas Periera about how to achieve the best skin of your life.

Sydney’s Douglas Periera is a clinical skincare specialist who has been in the industry for over 20 years, and has a passion for rejuvenating ageing and problematic skin.

We spoke with him about the do’s and don’ts of skincare, and how to create a skincare regime that will make skin clear, glowing and youthful.

Here’s what he had to say:

Select skincare products that are cosmeceutical grade and not cosmetic.

“So many products today claim to offer the fountain of skin youth and to reverse or prevent skin challenges such as wrinkles, pigmentation, acne, congestion, uneven skin tone and so on. Unfortunately what a lot of consumers don’t realise is that the cosmetic brand products only provide a superficial short term result and the percentage of active ingredients within the products are generally not sufficient to achieving corrective, long lasting results.”

“If a consumer is looking to achieve correctional long-term improvements for the health of their skin, it is imperative they look at using a Cosmeceutical grade product* Cosmeceuticals can produce structural changes within the skin and are ideal for the treatment of skin conditions like acne, hyper-pigmentation and aging. Cosmeceutical are not just skincare but rather a skin medicine.”

*Cosmeceutical grade products are scientifically formulated products that can be bought over the counter – one grade below a pharmaceutical products which require medical prescriptions to obtain. Cosmeceutical products contain higher percentages of active ingredients and complex formulas that enable active ingredient to be properly absorbed by the skin.

Unlike cosmetics, the ingredients in cosmeceuticals are stronger than your cosmetic-grade skin care products, but not as strong as pharmaceutical products. Therefore, they do not require a medical prescription to dispense, and can be used regularly on the skin without the major side effects of pharmaceuticals.”

Have an Age-Specific Skincare Regime

“As we age our skin needs change due to the bodies ageing process, hormones, environmental factors and heath changes. Because of this it is important for your skincare and treatment to change with your age.”

“In your 20’s you need to use good quality sun protection, a serum that contains a minimum of 10% Niacinamide and an antioxidant serum. You also need to minimise sun exposure and should start having professional skin treatments every one to two months.”

“In your 30’s, still use good quality sun protection, a serum that contains a minimum of 10% Niacinamide and an antioxidant serum, but now introduce serums that contain vitamin A, growth factors and introduce a lipid-based serum or booster. Introduce a non-granulated exfoliation such as a lactic acid or fruit enzyme to use a few times a week. Keep sun exposure to a minimum, and begin getting professional skin treatments once a month.”

Don’t rely on topical treatments – skin also needs to be nourished from within

“It is very much my belief that a major part of skin issue are due to imbalances with in the body’s health, nutrition, gut health and vitamin deficiencies. So, when I am treating skin conditions such as acne “especially hormonal acne”, rosacea and hormonal pigmentation I always refer my clients onto a clinical naturopath or wholistic GP.”

“Seeing a clinical naturopath or wholistic GP whilst under the care of a professional skincare provider will insure you are tackling your skin issues from all fronts.”

Cleanse Twice a Day:

“I have so many new clients coming into my clinic and say they only cleanse their face in the evening to remove makeup from the day. But it is very important to cleanse your face twice a day – in the morning and at evening.

It is of course imperative to cleanse in the evening, especially if you have been wearing makeup during the day. In fact, if makeup has been worn you should double cleanse your skin: once to remove the makeup, and again to clean the skin’s surface and remove impurities and toxins.

But what a lot of people don’t do is the morning cleanse. When we are asleep our body increases its detoxification process to eliminate toxins, and releases excessive oils, so it is important to remove the past night’s impurities from the pores and the surface of the skin. This will leave your skin fresh and clean to apply your daytime serums and creams.”
