The Best Skincare Tips For Your 20’s

the best skincare routine for twenty year old skin

Secure your future skin by taking care of your skin now.

Okay, so my skin in my thirties is not that bad. In-fact there are a lot of tips and tricks I learned from my late mother, to ensure I’d have good skin throughout my future skin’s future decades.

However, if I look back over a few skin and lifestyle decision from my twenties, I do wish I knew how they would have affected me later on. The truth is, much of what you do in life in your younger years, does come back to bite you in the butt later on.

Of course, it’s not all dire, and there are loads of great skincare treatments now available which do help you turn the skin clock backwards, like Micro and laser treatments. But of course, there are a few things I did in my twenties which have probably created a few troubling things later on in my thirties.

Like not drinking enough water, never wearing enough sunscreen, not cleansing enough, eating the wrong foods and probably WAY too many cocktails too.

Although I always had an arsenal of skincare products to help me take care of my skin (thanks mum), it probably wasn’t my main priority in my twenties.

The concept of anti-ageing skincare preventatives and treatments was the furthest thing from my mind in my twenties. For others though, it’s never too early to start. Which turns out, is actually a good thing.

It is important to find a happy medium between what you should and shouldn’t do, to protect your skin in your twenties, without going over the top, and ensuring you have excellent skin throughout your entire life.

Most of what you can do in terms of anti-ageing skincare in your twenties, is more about not treating the wrinkles which may form but holding them off for as long as possible. By following a few general common-sense skincare hacks, such as wearing sunscreen every day, you can hold the wrinkles at bay a lot longer.

Nicola Kropach, General Manager of cosmeceutical plant cell-based skincare brand Aesthetics RX says it’s actually really easy to protect your skin against long term damage and your twenties is a good time to start some fairly simple daily habits to help you achieve younger looking skin for longer.

Nicola has more than thirty years industry experience as a beauty therapist, and in more recent years has worked with brands developing products which works for Aussie skin in an Aussie climate.

Here are her five skincare tips for protecting skin in your twenties:

Wear Sunscreen:

Sun protection is the number one preventative measure you need to take in your twenties, if not earlier.

Sunscreen should be worn daily in Australia, no matter the climate or the season, to protect the skin from UV exposure which will not only damage and age the skin, but can cause serious skincare concerns in the future also like skin cancer and high pigmentation.

This can easily be achieved by choosing a daily moisturiser, BB or CC cream or foundation which  you like that contains some form of SPF which is thirty or above.

Protect Against Pollution:

Strong antioxidants like vitamin C and Kakadu Plum will help protect skin damage, as outside air pollution and free radicals can attack the skin.

Free radicals are unstable molecules which can cause damage to skin cells. They are found in the outside air and are often the creation of heavy pollution in the air created from cars, factories, electricity and other forms of technology (like radio waves).

When this attack happens, issues such as skin irritations and increased sensitivity can occur. Antioxidants help protect the skin against these attacks creating a barrier to reflect harmful pollutants.

Cleanse AM & PM:

AM cleansing is essentially washing away dead skin cells, oil, and grime which develops on the skin throughout the night.

Washing in the morning with a nourishing and hydrating cleanser means you are removing any toxins which have developed throughout the night on the skin, to clear it for the day.

PM cleansing is important at the end of the day, as it helps to remove any pollution stuck on the skin, makeup (which is a given), dirt and grime, and anything else on the skin.

If you have oily skin, cleansing at night is how you balance out excess sebum (oil) production on the skin to prevent pores from clogging and blemishes forming.

Maintain a Healthy Skin Balance:

Using the right products for your skin type which balance the skin will stop skin irritations forming and skin ageing signs showing.

The right balance could be keeping skin well hydrated day and night for dry skin types or balancing excess oily skin throughout the day and night, to prevent clogged pores and blemishes.

Try using cosmeucutical products which won’t strip or compromise the skin. They are designed to treat the skin by using the right about of balance between chemical and plant-based ingredients to cleanse and nourish skin, without blogging the pores or removal essential skin oils.

Practice Healthy Diet Habits:

Super important for skin at any age really.

Drinking plenty of water is a given for good skin which ages well. But it’s also important to adopt a low inflammation diet.

A low inflammation diet consists of foods and drinks which don’t trigger a response in the body to bloat, be irritated or have a reaction. Alcohol and sugar fuelled foods are absolutely guilty of this, as they create gut inflammations inside the body, which in turn, can then create outside responses such as skin irritations and breakouts.

Fresh wholefoods, good quality meats (if you eat meat) fruits and veggies are a must daily, as they provide the body with natural minerals and vitamins which are essentially then absorbed into the skin cells helping skin stay strong, healthy and young.
