Skin ageing is the number one reason people go to see skin expert. We can’t stop time to even slow it down, but we can give our skin the best chance of looking as fresh clean as young as possible for as long as possible.

Q: What causes ageing?

A: Chronological ageing is inevitable and is a part of our individual DNA as we naturally get older. The number one course of external skin ageing is the ultra violet rays emitted by the sun.

Everyone is affected by chronological ageing and the hands of time cannot be stopped.

Whilst sun damage is the number one cause of external skin ageing, glycation (when sugar molecules attack collagen protein) is the number one cause of internal ageing. Sun protection and diet both play a pivotal role in skin condition.

Q: Are there ways we can avoid it?

A: Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen; every one, every day, re-applied religiously. Glycation may be reduced via a balanced, low GI diet avoiding processed sugars. Whilst chocolate bars may be the obvious culprit, many fruit juices contain a staggering level of fructose sugar.

Q: Is it possible for exercise to aggravate it?

Yes. The sun burns and ages skin. When exercising outdoors, always wear a sunscreen. Sunscreen should be applied 20-30 minutes prior to sun exposure. Always re-apply after swimming or every 2 hours when exercising in direct sunlight. Some studies show excessive exercise can also damage skin and cause premature ageing.

Q: Do you think it is necessary to see a skincare expert for this condition?

Skin ageing is the number one reason people go to see skin expert. A professional consultation can create a personalised care plan including skin corrective products and treatments. Products should contain active antioxidants including vitamins A, C and E to protect and rejuvenate the skin.

Herbal peels are a non-invasive alternative to correct sun- damaged and environmentally ravished complexions.

Q: What would you recommend to someone coming to you with this condition and why?

Daily use of a sunscreen is a non-negotiable to achieve a younger-looking skin. Without this, the effects of all other products and treatments become redundant. Resurfacing herbal peels can accelerate the skin’s natural re-surfacing process to reveal a fresher, brighter, smoother and energised complexion.
