A new hair campaign just doesn’t seem to make sense to us.
The Real Beauty gurus at Dove are in the headlines again. This time for an emotionally charged hair campaign focussing on curly hair, implying girls would be prettier with straight locks.
Are they kidding? It seems a huge overstretch, as they are implying curly hair is something to be ashamed of and/or unattractive. And most of the women in the campaign are black.
It doesn’t feel right.
Dove conducted a survey of 859 women in the U.S., U.K. and Brazil in September 2014.
Just 10 percent of women respondents in the U.S. said they “feel proud” of their curly hair, and only four in 10 American girls with curly hair reported thinking that their hair was beautiful.
Their hair looks awesome – full of volume, height and shape. It’s natural.
I have straight hair – it was born without a kink, but I have spent hours in my life injecting curl into it. I love using hot rollers, curling tongs and putting it up in the sun to make it curl almost on a daily basis. Especially for a special occasion.
I’ve never had anyone negatively comment on my hair when it’s curly, and the huge array of beauty products available to help hair go curlier only adds to my argument that women like their hair curly.
We love it which is why we are running a fab beach promotion with John Frieda – we want to see your best beach hair both on and off the beach on our instagram or Facebook accounts to win up to $25,000 in prizes.
Meantime this is Dove’s promo which we don’t like – at all:
